Jacob A. Riis - An Amazing Journey

Back

This is the trailer for an international documentary film which is currently in development and in the process of seeking funding.

The legendary Danish-American Jacob A. Riis was one of the most ground-breaking journalists of the 19th century, as well as the creator of modern documentary photography.

Plagued by unrequited love, Jacob Riis emigrated from Denmark to the USA in 1870; he ended up the incarnation of the American Dream. ”An ideal American” is what he was called by his good friend, and President of the United States at the time, Theodore Roosevelt.

Riis had struggled his way up from the bottom as a vagabond, ship’s carpenter, flat iron salesman, and so on.

In time, he became recognized as one of the most outstanding social reformers in the United States; and in his book ”How the Other Half Lives” he used words and images to document the wretched conditions immigrants lived under within New York’s slums.

The story will move along several levels with Riis's love story as the driving force – a fascinating drama that will move viewers. At the same time, it is a story about the history of journalism, a social history, and how immigrant life was at the end of the 19th century.
